Our first Lambrusco tasting is Next Saturday, February 4th from 5-7pm! We've been so hard at work tasting fizzy white, pink, and deep purple Lambrusco, eating incredible cured meats and cheeses, which one goes with which, let's see, let's try it again to be sure.
Lambrusco. Don't know it? Imagine the best light bodied, fruity red you've ever had then add bubbles and give it a chill. This is the beverage millions of Italians in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy enjoy every day with aged cheeses and dry cured meats. It was pretty much ruined for us all years ago by Lambrusco being associated with something sugary and terrible - Riunite Lambrusco. In fact HERE'S SUSAN LUCCI trying to destroy your palate in 1977. But real Lambrusco is alarmingly fantastic, especially in spring and summer when you've rose'd yourself out and need a switch. Or you just want to throw a curve ball at your wine nerd friends. So, we invite you to begin or continue your Lambrusco education by joining us at our tasting.
Here are the four we liked best and why, all from Emilia Romagna, Italy:
Lini Bianca Labrusca Clear and bright, this one's got notes of orange peel, apple skin and a bit of spice on the nose and a stony, dry finish.
Pezzuoli Lambrusco Deep red, it smells of dried cherries, pine and a bit of mint. Just a hint of berry on the finish, and soft tannins.
Quarticello Barbacane Lambrusco One of the most unique Lambruscos we tried. Very dark red, and a wacky nose of coffee, earth, and leather. A big frame and a dry, dry finish.
Villa di Corlo Lambrusco A little bit lighter in weight and coloration than the other red bubblies, this is closer to what most people expect from Lambrusco, but not as sweet. It's still got a bit of tannin, but more cherries and vanilla on the nose.
Lambrusco Tasting Saturday, February 4th, 5-7pm $15/person Included are lovely pairings of cheeses and cured meats cozying up to each of these wines. Please rsvp to 323-478-1985 or to info@cowineco.com. We are filling up fast for this tasting!

Wine Tasting: Mikhail Baryshnikov Set Michael Jackson on Fire 5:30-8:30 (wines BTG continue until 11pm) 5 wines, $15 including gourmet cheeses and sides While reflecting on today (January 27th) in history, it must have been weird for Mikhail Baryshnikov when Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire while filming a Pepsi commercial on his birthday WHILE HE was filming White Knights. There is no obvious connection there but still....weird, right? So here's where this gets weird...Firestarter is also fliming at the same time! Conclusion? Baryshnikov set Michael Jackson on fire. Cheese O' the Month: Rogue Creamery's Caveman Blue
Rogue creamery had to tweak the recipe, mold strains, and finally, the accommodations for this guy several times. They wound up giving the caveman blue its own entirely seperate ageing facility. The free-range, fresh-grass eating cows that make the milk for this cheese must be happy cows as well, because the result is a butter-yellow, fudgy, dense cheese with little lactic crunchies in it and a nearly sweet, nutty smell. It's so much better than the grocery store, 'hot', super coiny blues we've had that I beg people who swear to dislike blues- literally, I beg them, to try this one anyway.
This lovely cheese is just one of several we offer every day on our 3-cheese ($8) or 5-cheese ($12) plates. ***
Cheers,
John and Jen and Kyler and Marlaine
