What the Obamas Drink With All That Arugula
In 1994, the Graham Beck Brut NV ($15.99/btl) was Nelson Mandela's choice of celebratory bubbly as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. In February of last year, the Chicago Tribune included a story about the Obamas going out to their favorite restaurant and falling in love with the Graham Beck Brut. So much so, they ordered six bottles and popped them in celebration before Barack Obama's speech at Grant Park this last fall. It just so happens that we agree with our new presidential family and have been carrying this delicious bottle for a little over a year now. So join us this Tuesday to toast the inauguration of our 44th president with the Obama's favorite bubbly! We'll be pouring the Graham Beck Brut plus six other selections from 11am through 9pm with the inauguration festivities on the radio. Really, is there a better reason to have a drink before noon?

Yet another gem from South Africa we've been carrying for awhile just got some nice press. When people ask us about this pinot noir we stress its uniqueness compared to traditional pinot noir from California, Oregon or France. It stands on its own not because of that typical strong ashy/dirty taste many South African reds share, but because of the complexity of spices you get on the nose and on the palate in addition to the traditional cherries, earth and mushroomy notes we're used to in pinot noir. Last year the '06 received 92 pts from Wine Spectator and the current '07 vintage just scored a 93 ($45.99/btl) Hamilton Russell Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 2007, South Africa - 93 points Bold, aromatic and ripe, but imminently elegant, with racy acidity providing the ground wire for the rich black cherry, bramble, incense, and sweet earth notes. Long, multi-faceted finish. The HR Pinot is quietly getting better and better. Drink now through 2013 - J.M.

Regular Wine Tasting Schedule
*** We hold tastings twice a week on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons , and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays the bar is open for wines by the glass . Please see our calendar for details on any given day: www.cowineco.com/calendar ***
Wine Tasting: Grammar Cracker Friday, January 16th -- TONIGHT! 5:30-8:30pm (wines by the glass also available from 4:00 to 11pm) $15/person 5 wines and gourmet cheeses from Auntie Em's Marketplace Please RSVP to: info@cowineco.com or (323) 478-1985 On this day in 1942, Queen Isabella of Spain is presented with the first outlines of grammar in modern language. Seems like a good time to address some important points: "irregardless" -- not a word, nope....just don't use it...please "for all intensive purposes" is not the phrase many think it is...it means "for all stressful intentions" whereas "for all intents and purposes" is the proper phrase and means "in every practical sense". Furthermore... "it's a doggy dog world" -- nope (this one we've heard more than once and while it may be true that is truly IS a doggy dog world, the saying is "dog-eat-dog world") A "Chester drawers" is something else entirely (sorry, Amanda) When you get dressed up you get "dolled up" not "dialed up" (I blame my mother for that one) If you use "literally" before stating something, you better mean it... for instance, when you say "I literally crawled out of my skin" then the person you're speaking to is going to throw up on your shoes. And lastly, the single most abused phrase in the English language... When you say "I could care less" to someone you're telling them, hey, I really kinda DO care about you're saying..so much so that I'm assuming there are other things that I care less about than what you're telling me right now....so keep talking.
What does all this have to do with wine? Nothing...just another reason for a Friday tasting...and really...is that so bad? wines Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde, Portugal Condes de Albarei Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain Lastour Coteaux du Quercy (Cab Franc), France Onix Red, Priorat, Spain Anglim Syrah, Paso Robles, California
