Sake and Me

Sake....most everyone likes it when they have it, but they don't go out of their way to have it in their home.  Though that is changing quickly.  What do you like best?

Like Wine Off a Duck's Back

We were recently speaking with another wine store owner about getting burnedout on wine at times.  Yes, it happens.  Poor us, we have such horrible jobs.  But we never seem to get sick of bubbly.  Especially bubbly like this new find, which gives your palate a little change from the everyday.  People often seem abashed when they admit they haven't heard of a certain grape varietal before.  Don't feel bad...we're still learning about grapes we've never heard of frequently.  With over 200 indigenous varietals in Portugal alone, we weren't surprised to learn of a new one last week.  Meet "Maria Gomes", a varietal not even mentioned in Karen MacNeil's go-to wine reference book, THE WINE BIBLE.  And Ms. Gomez just happens to make up the majority of this brut bubbly that has made our week of tasting dozens and dozens of wines very, very, very worthwhile.  READ ON HERE...

LATimes Wine of the Week

The Ponte de Lima Vinho Verde ($9.99/btl) is very deservedly getting more press, this time from our own LATimes.  CLICK HERE for the review.

Due to a delay getting a new shipment of this wine to southern California, it won't be in house again until Wednesday the 23rd, and because there is going to be limited supply, we highly recommend reserving a  bottle or two in advance!

Hometown Pairing

We're going to start a series of hometown wine pairings every once in awhile here in the newsletter.  For us, hometown means our very own Eagle Rock.  For those customers outside of Eagle Rock, hopefully this will encourage you to try some of our fine dining establishments if you haven't already.  For those locals out there...you've probably had the food, but try the wine pairing.  Trust us...it's damn good.

First we're going to begin with Oinkster.  Chef Andre Guerrero branched out in Eagle Rock as his third venture, after MAX and SENOR FRED in Sherman Oaks.  The idea was to do gourmet fast food, keep the menu small, provide a cool outdoor space, and watch the crowds roll in.  Well after dozens of shining reviews including comments from Jonathan Gold suggesting they had some of the best roasted chicken and fries in Southern California, they're doing rather well.  But, I digress.  I'm here to talk about pastrami.  House cured pastrami, to be exact.  Oinkster cures their pastrami for two weeks, rubs it with a special spice blend and smokes it with applewood.  It's messy, it's complex, it's fantastic.  So how to make it better?  Wine, of course.  CLICK HERE to read on....

The cover song has a long a bumpy history.  Some say the origins of the phrase are racist, going back to when radio stations were segregated and when the black station would have a hit, producers would have a white band redo it or 'cover' it.  Others think it had to do with rival artists and when one had a hit, the other would record a similar sounding song to 'cover' it.  Regardless of the true origins of the phrase, in modern language it now means Madonna doing 'American Pie' or Guns-n-Roses doing "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" or Michael Bolton doing "Dock of the Bay"....ech...I just threw up in my mouth.

Tonight we salute the cover song in all its sometimes-boring/sometimes-genius splendor.   So tip a glass with us while we run through a playlist of cover songs for the duration of the tasting.
