Sake and Me

Sake....most everyone likes it when they have it, but they don't go out of their way to have it in their home.  Though that is changing quickly.  What do you like best?

Let's Be Franc

In case you missed it, Patrick Comiskey wrote a really interesting article on Cabernet Franc in the LA Times last week.  Cab Franc is a really versatile red, great for this time of year as things get hotter and your body starts craving some lighter fare.  One of the Cab Francs he focused on is the Lang & Reed North Coast Cabernet Franc from Napa Valley, which already has a pretty big fan base at our store ($22.99/btl).

We Put the Recess in Recession

Yup, regardless of what the overzealous news pundits tell you, if you've been awake at all in 2008, you know we're in a recession.  But who says recessions have to be sad and gloomy?  Recessions are fun!  Here's a few things we're doing at home to celebrate....

wine bottles make great rolling pins so we can roll out dough for more cheeseless, sauceless, topingless pizzas

those wines that maybe you didn't finish and left on the counter for a week and may be turning slowly into vinegar make GREAT "thank you neighbor" gifts

draw whiskers on a cork and voila! - instant cat toy

after you sell all your jewelry at the pawn shop, you can use those cute champagne caps as beeeooootiful necklaces

AND AS YOUR PERSONAL WINE SHOPPERS, WE'VE COMPILED A LIST OF SOME OF OUR CHEAP (AKA "VALUE") WINES  THAT WE KNOW AND LOVE

$6.99/btl

Wisteria Cabernet Sauvignon, California

La Playa Sauv Blanc, Chile

On this day in 1968, camper/adventurer/survivalist Jamie "Chet" Whittaker walked out of the wilderness in upstate New York after being lost and presumed dead for 93 days.  He later explained to the press one of the unique ways he stayed alive -- a rare, fairly unknown process of collecting lightning bugs, putting them in a plastic bag with a piece of tinfoil as a reflector and squeezing the bag to excite them, thus creating a flashlight.  He also claimed that had he not eaten fast food as his last meal, he would have had a better sense of balance and found safety far sooner.

Here's to Chet and others like him....though we're pretty sure there aren't any others like him.  Cheers, Chet.

Lazy Sunday Tasting - Special Mother's Day Edition

Sunday the 11th

1-4pm

$12/person (unless you bring your mom - then it's $10 each)

4 wines and gourmet cheeses from Auntie Em's Marketplace

Our Sunday tastings will now feature slightly higher-end wine selections. Our Friday tastings get a little too loud to discuss the wines in great detail (we're not complaining), so if wine knowledge is your grail, Sundays are the best tastings for you.
