So that you know we too are hard at work over here in the store, here are some of the projects we've be working on (and will hopefully finish) in 2007: - expanded hours and days of operation - a shiny, new website - local delivery - more vittles in the bar - Drew-Cam: A remote camera on Drew's shoulder chronicaling his unique selling style, piercing wit, and otherwordly charm
***REMINDER: we're a small store so we can't carry all the wine we love at one time. If there is a special wine you want, we can order anything by the case usually within 48 hours. Call or email for price quotes***
Fits Like a Glove
We taste new wines all week during the day before our bar opens up at 4pm (oh, what horrible jobs we have.....sigh), and it's tough to find that special bottle that knocks us out, but doesn't cost an arm and a leg and a kidney. We scheduled our first tasting meeting of 2007 a couple weeks ago and right out of the gate, we found a remarkable Chablis-style Chardonnay from Edna Valley called Foxglove. Hooray! What luck! Anyway...sick of oak, butter and toasted gummy bears in your Chardonnay? Well, we merely ask for $10.99 and the Foxglove Edna Valley Chardonnay 2005 is yours. "A new offering, the 2005 Foxglove is basically a second label. It is a combination of estate grown fruit blended with Edna Valley grapes. About 15% is barrel fermented in old oak. The result is an outstanding white wine possessing attractive aromas of lemon oil, white corn, crushed rocks, and white currants as well as a steely crispness reminiscent of a top-notch Chablis. Drink it over the next 1-3 years." ~ 90pts , Robert Parker ("crushed rocks" huh, Robert? We thought it tasted a little more minerally, like wrapping your lips around a cement truck's spout while snorting powdered limestone through a vaccuum hose...Mmmmm....wine writing.)

If that's not reason enough, it's also the late Robert "Simply Irresistible" Palmer's birthday. He was so fine, there's no telling where the money went. Ok, so, tonight we will be pouring a Chardonnay from Chile by the famous Lafite Rothschild family (more tropical fruit than butter on this one), a 90 pt. Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, a Corbieres red from Chateau Caraguilhes mentioned in our last newsletter as one of our best finds in 2006, a rustic, lush Montepulciano d' Abruzzo from Marramiero, and a Rhone blend from one of our favorite French producers, Verget. wines Los Vascos Chardonnay 2006, Colchagua Valley, Chile Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc 2005, Marlborough, New Zealand Chateau Caraguilhes Corberies 2003, France Marramiero Dama Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2003, Italy Verget "Au Fils du Temps" Rouge, France

Sunday Tasting January 22nd 1-4pm $12/person 4 wines and gourmet cheeses from Auntie Em's Marketplace Our Sunday tastings will now feature slightly higher-end wine selections. Our Friday tastings get a little too loud to discuss the wines in great detail (we're not complaining), so if wine knowledge is your grail, Sundays are the best tastings for you. Call Sunday for selections.
Return of the Jerk Yes folks, we can't call this 'annual' since we flaked in 2006, but 2007 is here and we will never let Beef Jerky down again. Never forget! Our 2nd Beef Jerky/Wine Pairing event will take place on Thursday, February 1st. There will be turkey jerky, there will be spicy and sweet jerky, there may even be some endangered animal jerky (fun!), and we will be a-pourin' our favorite spicy reds and semi-sweet whites for the occasion. Stay tuned for specific wines and jerkies in our next newsletter, but sign up soon! Space is limited in our monthly Thursday special event tastings. Return of the Jerk: Jerky/Wine Pairing Thursday, February 1st 6:00-8:30pm $20/person 5 wines, jerky jerky jerky, and gourmet cheeses from Auntie Em's Marketplace Please RSVP to: info@cowineco.com or (323) 478-1985
See You Soon, John and Jen
"Similarly, polyphenols can be oxidized to quinones, and metals such as copper, iron, and manganese can be transformed from Cu+ to Cu2+, Fe2+ to Fe3+, and Mn2+ to Mn3+, respectively, with potential sensory changes. These same freakin' multivalent metals can also act as catalysts in oxidation reactions. Oxygen can complex with these metals, and they have been identified in intermediate oxidation products." ~ Enology Notes Volume 96, 2004 |
