Fattoria Laila Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore 2006
Marches, Italy -- $12.99/btlAugust, 2008 Winner of Longest Wine Name in CoWineCo three years running, this fresh and fruity white we just had to sneak onto the homepage before the LA heat went South for the Winter. Verdicchio is one of our absolute favorite white varietals and it is commonly passed up for it's more famous Italian sister, pinot grigio. Verdicchio has elements of peach, apricot and pear on the nose, a medium to light-body with a silky texture and tastes of almonds and minerals.
Fattoria Laila in Corinaldo lies in the rolling hills of the Marche (vineyards pictured above), overlooking the Adriatic Sea on the east coast of Italy (sounds ugly as hell, huh?). Verdicchio and Montepulciano, indigenous varieties in their 'Il Libretto" project, are cultivated here under the guidance of Lorenzo Landi, enologist and owner, who has helped to establish strict limits in the vineyard in order to craft excellent wines. Today, Laila is the leading vineyard project in all of the Marches, with densities that reach 8,000 plants per hectare, based on viticulral research not practiced anywhere else in this region.
So what to eat with this little number? Verdicchio is one of those rare few wines that pairs perfectly with fennel. Also, a hunk of hard pecorino cheese is a great and simple accompaniment. Also crack this open alongside the more expected light pork and seafood dishes and for very little money, you've elevated your meal to another level.
